The rule of thumb is to water when the soil is 80% dry. For sansevieria masoniana (variegated whale fin), it has to be placed at a bright location. For sansevieria macrophylla (non variegated), it can be placed in indirect/sun, as well as medium and low light.
These watering amounts are recommended with our soil mix and they might not be applicable for other soil mixes.

Q) What’s special about the sansevieria masoniana (variegated whale fin)?
A) The variegated whale fin has a unique shape and unusually wide, paddle-like leaves. The leaves are striped and stroked with pale, creamy yellow, as if from a painter’s brush. Being part of the sansevieria family, it’s also a natural air purifier.
Q) Where can I place the sansevieria masoniana (variegated whale fin)?
A) You can place it at a bright spot next to the window. Even though it’s under the sansevieria family that’s known for being low-light tolerant, this whale fin has variegation which means it has lesser chlorophyll and require more light.
Q) Where can I place the sansevieria macrophylla (non-variegated)?
A) You can place it at a location with varying light levels from low light to indirect sun.
Q) How often should I water it?
A) You can water it once a week. Stop when water drains out at the bottom.
Q) How does it grow?
A) The maximum it can grow to is about 60cm tall. It will then grow pups at the base, which you can gentle remove and propagate in separate pots. 
Aroid soil mix that provides it with nutrients and is also reasonably well draining. The Plant Loft “Forest” soil mix would be suitable.
