Q) What’s special about this plant?
A) Dorstenia has unique sunflower-like flowers that contain fruits. When ripen, the fruits will explode and the seeds get dispersed onto the ground.
Q) Is this plant considered a succulent?
A) No, it’s a caudex plant meaning it grows leaves from a bulb.
Q) How often do I water them?
A) Look at the colour of the soil mix. If it’s light brown, the mix is dry and you may proceed to water. If it’s dark brown, the mix is still wet and you shouldn’t water. The frequency should be about once a week. When you water, water thoroughly and stop when water drains out at the bottom.
Q) Where should I put them?
A) You should put them at a bright spot with filtered sunlight, e.g. next to the window. They can also withstand direct sun rays, but not too strong, best if it’s morning/evening sun rays.
Q) How big will they grow to?
A) About 7-8cm tall
Q) Do they flower? I see that some of them have a star shaped flower.
A) Yes. They have star shaped flower which contains fruits and seeds. When the fruits are ripe, the seeds will be dispersed onto the ground.
Q) How long will it take for the small ones to grow into the big ones?
A) It will take about 1-2 years
Q) Do I have to fertilise them?
A) You do not have to fertilise them regularly but If you notice the leaves are yellow or pale green, you can apply nutricote slow release fertiliser.
Problem: Leaves turning black
Dorstenia thrives best in a well-draining soil mix. Water will run through the roots and drain out immediately, so water will not stay in the soil and cause the bulb to rot. Recommended to pair with:
