Peat moss is made up of decomposed organic material, and is considered a better alternative to soil because it is more sterile and contains no pathogens, bacteria, fungi, harmful chemicals or weed seeds. it is also more lightweight and provides better drainage than soil, while retaining the same amount of water. Out of all our soil mixes, peat moss retains the most moisture, so we use it for plants which are always thirsty and requires daily watering, such as ficus annulata bonsais. You can also use peat moss for plants which are placed at warmer locations so they will not dry out so easily.
Peat moss is suitable for: Ficus annulata, Norfolk island pine, Oxalis fire fern, Caladiums, Water Clover (mix 30% peat moss with 70% water)
Yellow rocks are optional, for covering top layer after repotting
“Rock” is the soil mix with optimum drainage. Water runs through the medium and the roots and drains out almost immediately. It’s most suitable for plants which are sensitive to water and gets root rot easily. The colour of the soil mix helps to prevent over-watering as well. It turns light brown when it’s dry, and dark brown when it’s wet. That way, it’s clear when you have to water your plant.
The difference between “Tiny Rock” and “Rock” soil mix, only lies in the size of the individual grains. The materials used are the same. For e.g., in “Rock”, 3-5mm akadama is used, whereas in “tiny rock”, 2-3mm akadama is used. “Tiny rock” can be used for smaller plants. With the smaller spaces in between the grains, it can hold the plant more stably and prevent it from moving around during commuting. It can also help these smaller plants to absorb the water better as the roots become closer to the grains. In comparison to “Rock”, “Tiny rock” drains slower, so you can use it for succulent plants which require more water, e.g. haworthia.
Suitable for: Smaller sized cacti, dorstenias, phyllanthus, succulents, stephanias & haworthias
